Ein Rätsel, das man wirklich läuft, durch eine echte Stadt, mit einer Karte, die sich anfühlt wie ein echter Schatz. Das war die Idee. Und Rothenburg war der einzige Ort, an dem ich sie machen wollte.

A puzzle you actually walk, through a real town, with a map that feels like real treasure. That was the idea. And Rothenburg was the only place I ever wanted to make it.

Ich wollte eine Rätseltour bauen, die nicht im Digitalen verschwindet, sondern draußen stattfindet, eine Schnitzeljagd durch eine echte Stadt, auf einer Karte, die aussieht wie eine echte Schatzkarte. Rothenburg stand für mich nie zur Debatte: die gut erhaltenen Stadtmauern, der mittelalterliche Charme, diese Geschichte an jeder Ecke, ich liebe diese Stadt. Also habe ich einfach dort angerufen und gefragt, ob wir so etwas zusammen aufziehen wollen. Die Freude war groß, endlich mal ein Projekt zum Anfassen, nicht nur auf dem Bildschirm.

I wanted to build a puzzle tour that doesn't vanish into a screen but happens outdoors, a scavenger hunt through a real town, on a map that looks like a genuine treasure map. Rothenburg was never up for debate: the well-preserved town walls, the medieval charm, all that history around every corner, I love this town. So I simply called them up and asked whether we felt like putting something like this together. They were delighted, finally a project you can actually hold in your hands, not just something on a screen.

Den Schlüssel dazu hatte Lothar Schmidt, der die Geschichte Rothenburgs in- und auswendig kennt. Mit ihm und meinem Bruder Daniel bin ich die ganze Altstadt abgelaufen, Ecke für Ecke. Ich habe den gesamten Stadtgrundriss gezeichnet und als Schatzkarte gestaltet, und daraus, mit allem, was Lothar mir erzählt hat, die Rätsel entwickelt. Aus der Zusammenarbeit ist eine Freundschaft geworden, die bis heute hält.

The key to it all was Lothar Schmidt, who knows Rothenburg's history inside out. Together with him and my brother Daniel, I walked the whole old town, corner by corner. I drew the entire street layout and shaped it into a treasure map, and from that, with everything Lothar shared with me, I built the puzzles. What started as a collaboration grew into a friendship that still holds today.

Charta & sigillum

Die Karte habe ich drucken lassen und dazu ein eigenes Siegel entworfen und anfertigen lassen. Jede einzelne Karte habe ich von Hand gesiegelt. Verkauft wurde »Chronicles of Rothenburg« über das Tourismusbüro der Stadt. Es steckt unfassbar viel Arbeit und Herzblut darin, aber vor allem ganz viel Freude. Ein Projekt, das mich zurück zu meinen Wurzeln gebracht hat: Mittelalter, Historie, mit der Hand gemacht.

I had the map printed and designed my own seal, which I then had made to order. Every single copy I sealed by hand. "Chronicles of Rothenburg" was sold through the town's tourist office. There is an unbelievable amount of work and heart in it, but above all so much joy. A project that carried me back to my roots: the Middle Ages, history, made by hand.
